What Is Apache Archiva?

Apache Archiva is an open-source artifact repository manager for Maven. It provides proxy repositories (cache external dependencies), hosted repositories (store internal artifacts), and basic repository management features — user management, RSS feeds of changes, and search. Archiva was one of the early Maven repository managers, but its development has slowed significantly. Nexus and Artifactory have become the standard choices, offering broader package type support, better performance, and integrated security scanning.

Current Relevance

Apache Archiva is legacy artifact repository infrastructure. Nexus Repository and JFrog Artifactory are the recommended replacements — offering broader format support, active development, security scanning, and enterprise features. This course covers: maintaining existing Archiva deployments, migrating Maven repositories from Archiva to Nexus/Artifactory, and understanding Archiva's role in legacy DevOps toolchains. For new projects, Nexus or Artifactory should be used.
